Women's hockey wraps up season at nationals
The Sault College women's hockey team finished with a 2-1-0 record at their first ACHA National Championships appearance.
The Cougars played the University of New Hampshire (5-1W), the University of Vermont (6-1W), and Assiniboine Community College (3-1L) over three days. Assiniboine Community College continued to dominate the tournament and were named the ACHA Women's Division 2 Champions.
Head Coach Brianne Veale was impressed with the results, stating "the players had to battle through a lot of adversity this year and never lost sight of advancing to the National Championships. To lose a close game to the eventual champions shows that we are a top competitor in this league".
After ranking second in the Central Division, Veale noticed more interest from players looking to play competitive hockey at the post secondary level. "Our team's success has increased the number of players interested in playing for Sault College over the next few years. This has given us the opportunity to recruit top players locally and across Ontario" added Veale.
Paul Orazietti, Sault College's Manager of Athletics, was proud of the team's performance throughout the season: "It's hard to adequately convey into words the remarkable job our women's hockey team did this year. In spite of the pandemic, border restrictions, lockdowns and quarantines, they somehow found a way to stay connected and qualify and compete at the National Championships." Orazietti mentioned the success of the team "put Sault College women's hockey on the map in a big way in 2022", and looks forward to the program's success moving forward.
The Cougars will host a two day spring training camp on April 22nd and 23rd. Any players interested in trying out for the team are encouraged to fill out the registration form and attend these sessions.
