Cougars Down Purple Eagles in Saturday Night Hockey!

The Sault College Cougars travelled to Niagara Falls to take on the Niagara University Purple Eagles division 1 team for a 2-game set over the weekend. Game one would get underway at the Dwyer Arena with an 8:30 PM puck drop. Farrah Farstad would start in net for Sault College while Mackenzie Addley would start for the Purple Eagles.

The Cougars brought the intensity right out of the gate with Danika West continuing her strong start to the year scoring in the opening minute after banging home a rebound off a Materia Land shot. The Cougars would keep the pace up as the period went on, firing 21 shots at the Purple Eagles goaltender. Addley would be equal to the task, keeping the score 1-0 heading into the first intermission.

As the second period got underway, the tension began to ramp up as the Cougars were sent to the penalty box three times. The Cougars would remain disciplined defensively, killing off all three penalties before being rewarded with a powerplay of their own with seven minutes remaining in the frame. On the power play, Alyssa Byers passed to Emily Moore at the top of the circle, and she fired a shot on the net. The initial shot was stopped but Emma Lee was there to cash in the rebound and extend the Cougars lead to 2-0 heading into the final period.

The Purple Eagles would start the third period with sustained pressure, but Farrah Farstad was equal to the task. Niagara University eventually solved Farstad with 3:29 remaining in the game when Sarah Sweitzer ripped one past Farstad from the slot. The Cougars would restore the 2-goal lead right away as Emily Moore found Annika Babineau alone in front of the net and she would make no mistake icing the game.

Farstad would record her fourth win of the season recording 28 saves. The Cougars are back in action Sunday for the second half of their weekend series.
