Cougars Curling kicks off the OCAA Championships with a Big Day 1!
Sautl College got started at the OCAA Curling Championships in Hamilton on Wednesday. Sault College sent three teams to the championship, a men's team and a pair of mixed teams.
On the Men's draw, the Cougars opened up with a match against Fleming College. Both teams exchanged singles in the opening two ends before the Cougars managed to score 5 in the third end and steal an additional 3 in the fourth end, cruising to a decisive 9-1 victory. In their second game of the day, the Cougars faced off against Humber College. Humber would grab a single point in the first end, and Sault College would respond with a pair in the second end. Humber would add another single in the third end, before stealing a single in the fifth, 3 in the sixth and another single in the seventh. The COugars would ultimately fall 7-2, finishing the opening day with a 1-1 record.
In mixed curling action, Sault-1 started with a 7-6 win over Niagara-1. The Cougars led 4-1 after four ends, but Niagara fought back, cutting the deficit to 7-5 in the seventh. However, Sault College held on to secure the win. In their second match, Sault-1 delivered a dominant 7-0 victory over Fanshawe, scoring one point in each of the first five ends before adding two in the sixth.
Sault-2 opened their day with a 12-4 win over Niagara-2. After leading 3-0 through two ends, the Cougars and Knights were tied 3-3 after four. Sault then exploded for five points in the fifth and added four more in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Sault-2's second win was a nail-biting 6-5 victory over Mohawk. The Cougars led 4-3 after six ends and sealed the win with two points in the seventh.
The Cougars are back in action all week as they vie for the provincial championship!
