History was written on Thursday night (March 19). The Sault College women's hockey team cemented itself as the most successful program in ACHA Division II history, capturing its fourth consecutive national title with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over namesake rivals Assiniboine Cougars in the championship game in St. Louis, Missouri.
The team led by Megan Dubas completed a perfect run, winning all five games in the tournament while scoring 22 goals and allowing just two. The achievement marks the final chapter of Sault College's Division II dynasty, as the program is set to make its debut in ACHA Division I next fall.
Sault and Assiniboine entered the final as the two best teams in the tournament, both undefeated and boasting high-powered offenses. Coming off a dominant 7–0 win over the University of Saint Thomas the night before, the Sault Cougars came out with intensity, determined to impose their pace from the opening faceoff. It didn't take long for them to break through. Less than a minute into the first period,
Payton Stos finished a play set up by
Taryn Sullivan to give the reigning champions a 1–0 lead.
At the time, no one knew that Stos' goal would stand as the historic game-winner of Sault's four-peat. She would later be named tournament MVP, finishing with two goals and three assists in five games.
Despite the early lead, the goal did little to ease the pressure. Assiniboine responded well and managed to balance the game, with the first period ending in a nearly even shot count, narrowly favouring Sault 13–12.
In the second period, Assiniboine pushed forward with an all-or-nothing approach in search of the equalizer. That urgency, however, resulted in an excessive number of penalties, allowing Sault College to control the game's tempo. With composure and discipline, the defending champions dictated play but were unable to convert their advantage into goals, setting up a tense and decisive final period.
In the third, Assiniboine made one last push to tie the game, but it was in the most critical moments that Sault's defensive solidity stood out. The Cougars shut down every offensive effort from their Manitoba rivals. They managed the clock with precision to seal the victory, closing out an extraordinary four-year run defined by dominance and championships.
"Honestly, it's crazy. I've been emotional all week. I couldn't be prouder of this team", said the Head Coach Megan Dubas, a few minutes after the feat. "I'm also proud of their hard work, their dedication to this program, never giving up, digging deep and finding a way to get things done", added Megan.
With the title, Sault College ends its Division II era as the most decorated program in league history, with four national championships—one more than the Rainy River Voyageurs (now Minnesota North). ACHA Division II has been contested since 2007.
Next season, the Cougars from Sault Ste. Marie will move up to ACHA Women's Division I, stepping into the top tier of the association and opening a new chapter in the program's history.
